#YSOSS 3 Seminar 5 – Impact of Agrarian Crisis on Women Farmers in Akoli Khurd Village, Yavatmal, Maharashtra

The fifth seminar of the FAS Young Scholars’ Online Seminar Series 2024-25 will be presented by Shivangi Goswami, PhD. scholar, TERI School of Advanced Studies, on Friday, January 31, 2025 at 4 PM IST.

Shivangi’s study explores multifaceted challenges faced by women farmers in the context of the agrarian crisis in Akoli Khurd village, Yavatmal district, Vidarbha region, Maharashtra—an area known as the epicentre of farmer suicides. The research focuses on their lived experiences through the crisis, the coping mechanisms they adopt, and the effectiveness of various policy interventions. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, the study employs participant observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions to gain a nuanced understanding of women farmers’ challenges and struggles.

The discussant for this session is Dr. Ranjini Basu, Garware Post-Doctoral Fellow, University of Pennsylvania Institute for Advanced Study of India (UPIASI), New Delhi.

The series is chaired by Barbara Harriss-White, Emeritus Professor of Development Studies, the University of Oxford.
